The New Jersey Transit board recently approved spending $5.7 million to complete final design on a passenger-rail link between downtown Hakcensack and the Main Line station in Hawthorne.

Scheduled to begin in 2008 and be complete in 2010, the $156 million project includes upgrading existing New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway right of way. Featuring up to nine stations, the eight-mile line will enable passengers to transfer between Main Line and Passaic-Bergen trains in Hawthorne.

NJ Transit plans to operate diesel multiple units along the line; the Federal Railroad Administration already has approved a grant for the vehicles.
