Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
New Jersey Transit’s board recently gave the green light to Transit Link Consultants to begin preliminary design for a concourse at New York City’s Penn Station. The firm is a joint venture between Parsons Brinckerhoff and Systra Consulting Inc.
The project is part of NJ Transit’s plan to improve rail service and access, and expand capacity at Penn Station. To connect with a new Moynihan Station and MTA Long Island Rail Road’s 8th Avenue concourse, the Penn Station concourse will enable NJ Transit to operate up to four more trains per hour.
The project also calls for extending platforms that serve four tracks to accommodate longer trains and connect them with the new concourse. The new concourse, platform extensions and other Penn Station capacity improvements are expected to be complete by 2010.
In November, NJ Transit signed an agreement with Moynihan Station Development Corp. that will enable the transit agency to become the facility’s anchor rail tenant.
