New Jersey Transit recently approved plans to complete preliminary design work for a Hudson-Bergen light-rail line extension in Bayonne, N.J.

The project will extend the line from its current southern terminus at 22nd Street one mile south to a new station at 8th Street. The project includes constructing a viaduct to carry light-rail vehicles over streets to an elevated platform at the 8th Street Station.

NJ Transit plans to let a design/build contract for the project in mid-2007. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008 and be complete in late 2009.

Opened in 2000, the Hudson-Bergen line currently serves 23 stations in Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City and North Bergen.
