NJ Transit to improve fluidity, reliability of 96-year-old bridge
advertisement
New Jersey Transit is seeking options to eliminate a major chokepoint and improve reliability on a portion of the Northeast Corridor. The agency recently awarded a $3.3 million contract to AKRF Inc. to prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Amtrak Portal Bridge project.
The engineering firm will analyze several options for the 96-year-old double-track swing bridge over the Hackensack River, such as replacing the span or elevating it to reduce the number of openings. The environmental study is expected to be complete in late 2007. Work is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
