NJ Transit to offer improved service for Raritan Valley passengers

Yesterday, New Jersey Transit’s board approved two projects designed to offer more convenient service for Raritan Valley Line (RVL) passengers.

The agency got the green light to construct a quarter-mile passing track in Readington Township near White House Station, which will enable NJ Transit to operate bi-directional traffic on the single-tracked line. Now, trains only operate east in the morning and west in the evening. By mid-2007, the agency plans to add eight trains west of Raritan Station.

The $13 million contract includes making right-of-way improvements, and installing track, signals and switches.

The board also approved redesigning an interlocking near Newark Penn Station that will enable all RVL trains to use the same platforms as New York-bound trains, providing passengers same-platform transfers. Now, Raritan Valley passengers have to go up two sets of stairs to the concourse level to connect with New York-bound service. The project is expected to be complete in mid-2008.
