NMB introduces intern program to teach students about labor relations

The National Mediation Board (NMB) recently created an intern program designed to introduce students to the complexities of railroad and airline labor relations. The goal: to engage students in a wide range of academic disciplines to work in the labor relations field.

The Brunkenhoefer-Lee-Moneypenny Intern Program is named after three long-time labor relations executives: James Brunkenhoefer, or “Brokenrail” to many, the late United Transportation Union national legislative director; David Lee, the late National Railway Labor Conference vice chairman; and Charlie Moneypenny, the former railroad director and legislative representative of the Transport Workers Union of America.

“The most successful practitioners in labor relations bring a strong desire to help the labor force and the country by creating strong carriers with fair and attractive work places in which skilled workers can continue to move people and products across America,” NMB officials said in a prepared statement.  “A commitment to fairness, integrity, creativity, collegiality and pragmatism are the basic principles that make it possible to create these work places, and they are the principles embodied by the three labor relations paragons for whom the NMB program is named.”
