NS Conductor Mulligan takes home Hammond safety award

Yesterday, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) named Norfolk Southern Railway conductor and 38-year railroading veteran Tom Mulligan winner of the 2004 Harold F. Hammond Award for safety.

Established in 1986, the award — which recognizes an individual railroad employee for outstanding safety achievement — is named after the late Harold F. Hammond, who served as president of the Transportation Association of America and chairman of the E.H. Harriman Memorial Safety Awards selection committee.

For seven of the past eight years, Mulligan has served as chairman of his terminal's safety committee. He worked with a customer to develop plant switching procedures that serve as a model for the shipper’s switching operations at its U.S. and European plants.

In addition, Mulligan has facilitated safety workshops for train and engine-service employees, and provided Operation Lifesaver classes for NS customers and suppliers.

The AAR also presented certificates of commendation to nine rail employees:
• Chris Catsicopoulos, a Metra machinist;
• Michael Conway, a Canadian Pacific Railway section foreman;
• Richard Dawes, a Montana Rail Link locomotive engineer;
• Deborah Denton, a Union Pacific Railroad carman;
• Lonnie Harris III, a CSX Transportation bridge mechanic;
• Chris Pieper, a MTA Long Island Rail Road assistant supervisor of material;
• Michael Schmidt, a Kansas City Southern bridge foreman;
• Harry Seubert, an Amtrak field environmental specialist; and
• Gary Watkins, a BNSF Railway Co. locomotive engineer.
