Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Tim Mannas recently received Association of American Railroad's 2003 Holden/Proefrock Award.

Named after tank-car damage-assessment pioneers Roy Holden and Art Proefrock, the award recognizes a rail-industry individual who's made a significant contribution to hazardous-materials transportation safety.

An assistant manager of hazardous materials in Pittsburgh known throughout the industry as "Tank Car Tim," Mannas has investigated and mitigated several major hazardous-materials incidents throughout his 34-year career. He also has conducted presentations at conferences, and developed and conducted training sessions for the Transportation Community Awareness Emergency Response program.

In 1999, Mannas joined NS after stints with Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, and Conrail. From 1979 to 1996, he served AAR's Bureau of Explosives as district, senior and chief inspector.
