CSX Corp. uses a Web site to promote its National Gateway double-stack intermodal corridor. Now, Norfolk Southern Corp. has one, too, to tout its Crescent Corridor intermodal route, as well as the benefits of public-private partnership projects.

NS recently launched TheFutureNeedsUs.com to describe the corridor projects its pursuing to increase capacity, improve mobility and preserve the environment in Alabama, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and other states. The 2,500-mile Crescent Corridor — which will run between New Jersey and Louisiana — will be among the largest additions of new freight transportation capacity since the interstate system, according to NS.

Among the corridor’s projected public benefits: $326 million in tax revenue generated for states and communities; 1.3 million long-haul trucks diverted from interstates; 1.9 million tons of fewer carbon emissions; $575 million in congestion savings and $92 million in highway maintenance savings; and 169 million less gallons of fuel consumed.

To establish the corridor, NS plans to build intermodal facilities in Memphis, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., and Franklin County, Pa., and expand terminals in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pa. The railroad also will straighten curves, add passing tracks, construct double tracks and install signals.
