Norfolk Southern Corp. recently established the Arnold B. McKinnon Scholarship at the University of Denver to support graduate education in intermodal transportation management for the Intermodal Transportation Institute’s (ITI) executive masters program.

NS’ chairman and chief executive officer from 1987 to 1992, McKinnon was a “strong proponent of intermodal transportation,” ITI officials said in a prepared statement. He played a major role in the creation of Triple Crown Services and the acquisition of major Conrail segments.

“The creation of the Arnold B. McKinnon Scholarship honors the family of one of the chief architects of the modern Norfolk Southern and underscores the company’s commitment to investing in our people,” said Mike McClellan, NS vice president of intermodal and automotive marketing.

Founded in 1997, ITI offers an executive masters program aimed at preparing the next generation of senior management for the intermodal transportation industry. The institute is recruiting for its 10th graduate class, which will begin in fall 2011.
