The Heart of Georgia Railroad (HOG) recently received Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Business Development Award.

The Class I honored the 200-mile short line's efforts to attract business for NS and HOG from two large construction companies completing major highway projects on Interstate 75 in central Georgia.

For example, Archer Western Co. is widening I-75 through Cordele, Ga., and converting the highway's surface from asphalt to concrete. Archer Western located its concrete production facility on HOG's line west of the project location. The facility receives up to 400 carloads of aggregates each month.

Owned by Atlantic Western Transportation Inc., HOG interchanges with NS, CSX Transportation, the Georgia Central Railway and Georgia Southwestern Railroad.

Meanwhile, Landstar Global Logistics recently named Union Pacific Railroad the 2007 Rail Carrier of the Year. The award recognizes the Class I for excellence in on-time transit, equipment availability and condition, technology support, sales representation and customer service responsiveness.

Landstar Global Logistics' independent agents selected UP as the award winner.
