Norfolk Southern Corp. June 18 presented its 5th Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Awards to 24 chemical companies and seven chemical plants to recognize those customers' safe-handling efforts when moving hazardous chemicals on NS' system during a calendar year.
The 2000 winners are: AKZO Nobel Chemicals Inc.; Archer Daniels Midland Co.'s Peoria, Ill., plant; Big West Oil Co.; BOC Gases; BP-NGLBU; Citgo Asphalt Refining Co.; E.I. DuPont De Nemours & Co.'s Belle, W.Va., plant; Enterprise Products' Dragon, Miss., plant; Equistar Chemicals LP; ExxonMobil Chemical Co.; Formosa Plastics Corp. of America; Horsehead Resource Development Co.; Huron Tech; Ineos Acrylics Inc.; Koch Industries; Koppers Industries Inc.'s Follansbee, W.Va., plant; Lyondell Chemical Co.; Marsulex Inc.; Occidental Chemical Corp.; Olin Corp.'s Nixon, Ga., and Charleston, Tenn., plants; PCS Phosphate; Potash SK; PPG Industries Inc.; Praxair Inc.; Rhodia Inc.; Rohm & Haas Co.; Premcor Refining Group's Lima, Ohio, plant; Shell Canada Ltd.; Texaco Natural Gas Liquids division of Texaco Natural Gas Inc.; and Tosco Refining Co.
To earn award consideration, NS requires customers to ship more than 1,000 carloads of hazardous chemicals on the railroad without causing a single product release.
"Our goal is the safe transportation of every shipment on our rail system, [and] partnerships with safety-minded customers, such as our chemical shippers, help make that goal achievable," said David Goode, NS chairman, president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.
