NS improves Chicago-to-Pennsylvania intermodal service

Norfolk Southern Railway recently redesigned its intermodal service between Chicago and Taylor, Pa., by improving transit times, lowering rates and offering a guaranteed pricing option.

Available for an additional $100 charge per container, the "On-time or Free Guarantee" option applies to 48- and 53-foot Equipment Management Program containers, 48-foot North American Container System containers, rail-controlled trailers, and privately owned trailers and containers.

Since implementing the service enhancements in June, NS has improved on-time train performance to Taylor.

"Additionally, we anticipate the benefits shippers currently enjoy in the Chicago/Taylor lane expanding to points on the West Coast," said Tom Reese, NS account manager for northeastern Pennsylvania, in a prepared statement.

The Class I plans soon to improve the lane's westbound service, as well as introduce additional guaranteed-service options.

Earlier this year, NS also improved Taylor Yard through a public/private partnership with the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and yard operator Northeast Freight Transfer. The railroad repaved inbound and outbound lanes, and added parking spaces.
