Norfolk Southern Corp. is "going green" and the Class I has issued its first-ever report that details how.

NS' initial 56-page "sustainability report," which the railroad plans to issue annually, includes narrative, metrics and profiles of employees who are making a "green" difference, the Class I said. The report's content models the Global Reporting Initiative's sustainability reporting guidelines.

NS has posted the report on its environmental Web site at www.nscorp.com/footprints.

"Our goal is to achieve industry leadership in fuel conservation, emissions reduction, efficient energy use, recycling, use of renewable materials and environmental partnerships," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement. "We believe it is our responsibility to conduct our business in accordance with sustainability practices that will help to provide ongoing opportunities for our people, our communities, our customers and our investors."
