Norfolk Southern Corp. has “made good progress” with environmental stewardship, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman said in the Class I’s second-annual sustainability report released earlier this week.

The 62-page report includes NS’ first-ever carbon footprint calculation — measuring total greenhouse gas emissions in 2008 — and highlights the railroad’s environmental efforts. The Class I’s carbon footprint last year was calculated at 5.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, such as carbon dioxide emissions from locomotives and electricity generated for rail facilities.

"We have continued efforts on several fronts to increase our fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse emissions," said Moorman. “For example, locomotive fuel economy has improved almost 3 percent over the past year.”

Meanwhile, BusinessWeek magazine named NS one of the 50 "Best Places to Launch a Career.” The Class I ranked No. 26 on the list.

The magazine’s fourth-annual listing of top employers for recent college graduates is based on a survey of U.S. employers, college career services directors and about 60,000 college undergraduates. The survey analyzed pay and benefits, training programs and advancement opportunities.
