The rail industry long has touted its environmental advantages. Now, shippers can gauge how freight-rail movements would benefit the environment through Norfolk Southern Corp.’s new online carbon footprint analyzer.

NS recently launched the “Green Machine,” which can estimate greenhouse gas emission reductions if rail transportation becomes a larger component in shippers’ supply chains. Accessible through NS’ environmental Web site at www.nscorp.com/future and  “accessNS” e-commerce portal, the calculator prompts users to enter shipment volumes and network or lane information. Users then can gauge potential emission reductions.

The analyzer shows how many automobiles would have to be taken off congested highways and how many trees would have to be planted to achieve similar air quality improvements.
