NS makes service pledge to UPS

Norfolk Southern Railway recently developed a new slogan aimed at raising its service bar for United Parcel Service: "Peak Time! - All the Time!"

"Our goal is to handle every load we receive from UPS without a service failure year-round, not just during the UPS peak season," said Randy Survant, NS group manager, domestic marketing and performance, in the railroad's monthly newsletter released Nov. 26.

During 2002, NS has improved its UPS service 80 percent service year-over-year, largely because of better communication, teamwork and train performance, Survant said.

"We're running a scheduled railroad for almost all commodities and markets with the Thoroughbred Operating Plan (TOP) in place," he said.

In early 2002, NS implemented TOP, its redesigned merchandise carload network.

To kick off UPS' peak season, NS representatives (including senior management) recently met with UPS officials to discuss the railroad's service strategy.
