NS moves military vehicles, equipment for Operation Iraqi Freedom

For 30 days in November and December, Norfolk Southern Corp. played a role in moving military equipment and supplies for Operation Iraqi Freedom 3, according to the Class I's January newsletter.

NS, CSX Transportation and Star Intermodal loaded and moved about 1,200 carloads of containers and vehicles — including armored personnel carriers — from U.S. Army bases in Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma to the Port of Savannah. After the companies unloaded the unit trains at the port, the Army shipped the equipment and materials to Iraq.

"Government business is extremely important to NS, and we're working hard to become a larger, more critical link in their vital supply chain," said Brooke Balbach, NS product manager of government services.
