NS names 21-story Norfolk headquarters after former leader McKinnon

Nearly 20 years ago, Arnold McKinnon helped cut the ribbon to commemorate the opening of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s 21-story headquarters in Norfolk, Va. Now, the 300,000-square-foot green-glass office tower bears his name — coinciding with the railroad’s 25th anniversary.

NS recently named its headquarters the Arnold B. McKinnon Building to honor the corporation’s second chairman, president and chief executive officer. McKinnon served in that post from 1987 to 1992, capping his 41-year railroad career.

He played a major role in helping the railroad take advantage of competitive marketing opportunities brought about by industry deregulation, envisioned NS as an integral link in the global logistics chain, and fostered a culture of continuous improvement in service and safety, according to the Class I.

“Much of what the company is today, we owe to Arnold’s vision and his ability to translate that vision into goals and results,” said current NS Chairman, President and CEO Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.
