NS names Atlanta office building after long-time leader Goode

When entering Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Atlanta office building, people will be walking into the David R. Goode Building. The Class I has named the building after the long-time chairman and chief executive officer, who plans to retire at the end of January 2006.

Since being named NS chairman, president and CEO in 1992, Goode has led the railroad through economic downturns and the Conrail integration. He’s currently the longest-tenured CEO among the Class Is.

"David’s contributions will far outlive bricks and mortar," said NS President Wick Moorman in a prepared statement. "His focus on making rail a dependable and sought-after transportation partner has helped shape Norfolk Southern and the rail industry for the new century."

After acquiring the 12-story building from AT&T last year, NS consolidated departments from various Atlanta locations into the facility. Currently, the railroad houses about 1,200 employees at the building; 600 more workers soon will be relocated to the facility.
