Norfolk Southern Corp. recently received a 2004 Urban League of Hampton Roads award, which recognizes a Norfolk, Va.-area company's workforce diversity efforts.
The railroad was presented the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, which is named after the National Urban League's executive director from 1961 to 1971, who was a known civil rights leader, earned the Medal of Freedom and helped corporations understand the importance of diversity, according to a prepared statement.
"Whitney Young's efforts in this area are reflected at Norfolk Southern today, where we see diversity as a critical business asset," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer David Goode.
