Norfolk Southern Railway June 3 opened a Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer (TBT) terminal in Augusta, Ga., and selected Quality Terminals to operate the facility, which is located off Interstate 20.
Quality Terminals, a division of Quality Carriers, also operates NS' TBT facilities in Columbus, Ohio, and Spartanburg, S.C.
TBT terminals are designed to handle transfers of bulk products (such as plastic pellets and liquid sweeteners) from one transportation mode to another.
The Augusta terminal, which can handle dry and liquid-bulk products, includes security, full fencing, lighting, 24-hour access, truck scales and 44 car spots with separate tracks for food products.
"The Augusta facility will enhance Norfolk Southern's network of 29 existing TBT terminals … and allow shippers to increase their distribution options east of Atlanta and throughout the south," said Mike Webb, manager of NS' supply-chain and distribution-services group MODALGISTICS(SM), in a prepared statement.
NS already operates two TBT facilities in Georgia, as well as terminals in Maryland, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Delaware, New Jersey, Florida, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia and Indiana.
