NS selects Tennessee site for Crescent Corridor intermodal terminal

A week ago, Norfolk Southern Corp. announced it selected a site in McCalla, Ala., for a $112 million intermodal terminal that will be built along the proposed Crescent Corridor. Now, NS has selected a site in Rossville, Tenn., for a $129 million intermodal terminal that will serve the Memphis region as part of the corridor initiative.

The Class I expects to open the 570-acre Rossville facility — which will be designed to handle more than 327,000 containers and trailers annually — in January 2012. The facility is projected to divert more than half a million trucks from Tennessee highways annually, as well as save 27 million gallons of fuel, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 300,000 tons and create more than 5,100 jobs.

“Because of its strategic location and growing intermodal demands in the South, the Memphis regional terminal will be an anchor for the Crescent Corridor, and help make possible truck-competitive freight transportation between the South and major Northeast markets,” said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement.

NS’ proposed 2,500-mile Crescent Corridor would run between the Northeast and Southeast, from New Jersey to Louisiana.
