Norfolk Southern Corp. and Motiva Enterprises L.L.C. recently opened a high-capacity ethanol terminal at Motiva's petroleum distribution facility in Sewaren, N.J. — the largest rail-served ethanol terminal in the New York Harbor area, according to a prepared statement.
Designed to serve New York and Connecticut, and replace a 23-car-per-day capacity terminal, the facility is designed to unload 40 rail cars and handle more than 2 million gallons of ethanol daily. The terminal will enable NS to eliminate local bottlenecks, and improve transit and turnaround times, safety, security and product tracking technology.
"In 2004, Norfolk Southern … delivered more than 160 million gallons of ethanol to the Sewaren terminal," said Tom Brugman, NS group vice president of agriculture, fertilizer and consumer products. "With the expansion, this volume will increase significantly, making this terminal location the primary distribution center for ethanol in the Northeast and a key component of Norfolk Southern's ethanol marketing strategies."
