NS subsidiaries' fused system targets shipment tracing across truck, rail

Norfolk Southern Corp. subsidiaries MODALGISTICS and TransWorks recently combined their online transportation-management systems to create a Web-based application aimed at tracking freight across modes.

The application is designed to enable users to tender and select a carrier; create and transmit bills of lading; schedule pickup and delivery; manage equipment; and view inbound and outbound orders from suppliers and customers. The application also includes automated back-office processing functions, such as document management and automatic payment.

"Integrating MODALGISTICS' over-the-rail visibility with TransWorks' over-the-road capabilities will give shippers end-to-end visibility," said MODALGISTICS President David Lawson in a prepared statement.

MODALGISTICS provides supply-chain consulting, technology and operational-support services to industrial customers and commodity-based businesses. TransWorks provides automated transportation technology and software services to carriers, shippers and transportation intermediaries.
