Norfolk Southern Corp. recently received Toyota Logistics Services' Excellence Award — the fifth-straight year the shipper has recognized NS’ on-time performance.

Last year, the railroad moved more than 61,000 Toyota carloads, including vehicles originating from NS-served plants in Georgetown, Ky., and Princeton, Ind.

Since Toyota launched the award program in 1996, NS has received the honor six times.

Meanwhile, another Class I has handed out its own hardware to honor chemical shippers’ safe-handling performance. BNSF Railway Co. recently presented annual Product Stewardship Awards to 60 shippers for safely transporting hazardous materials via rail in 2006 and successfully implementing policies under the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® initiative.

The winners include BP Products North America Inc. and Olin Corp.’s Chlor Alkali Division, which have received the honor every year since BNSF introduced the awards in 1997. The awards recognize chemical shippers who transport a minimum of 500 loaded tank cars of hazardous materials in a given year and experience no non-accident material releases.
