On Monday, Norfolk Southern Corp. will boot up a new e-commerce tool aimed at providing shippers more control over their supply chains.

Part of the Class I's accessNS Web portal, Thoroughbred Pacesetter will serve as a direct link to the railroad's yard inventory and car reporting systems. The tool offers functions designed to help customers directly manage freight-car orders and releases, increase real-time car pipeline visibility and access a detailed local car inventory.

Pacesetter also will feature an industry first: service-based demurrage that directly links NS service to demurrage credits, the railroad said. NS officials believe customers can better manage their shipping costs by linking the Class I's service to demurrage and storage credits.
