Yesterday, the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) named Norfolk Southern Railway the winner of this year's William W. Hay Award, which recognizes excellence in rail engineering projects. The association recognized the Class I with the award at AREMA's annual conference in Orlando. The Class I won the honor for the Heartland Corridor clearance improvement project, a $190 million project that called for removing obstructions along a Columbus, Ohio-to-Norfolk, Va. route to accommodate double-stack container trains. The project met the criteria for the Hay award — which is named after the late Dr. William W. Hay — of innovation, safety and service performance reliability, according to AREMA. The public-private partnership project also will provide a seamless and efficient intermodal route for NS, and cut transit time by about one day, according to the association. NS plans to begin moving intermodal trains along the Heartland Corridor in early September.
This is the 12th year AREMA has presented the Hay award.
