Designated a "National Special Security Event" by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Republican National Convention — under way at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and ending tomorrow — is prompting federal, state and local authorities to step up security efforts.

So, MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) contracted broadband, and communications technology and services provider Eagle Broadband Inc. to provide its SatMAX™ wireless satellite repeater technology with Iridum-based services from the World Communications Center, a global satellite voice and data communications provider. The suppliers are providing communications for NYCT staff during the convention.

The systems will enable agency field workers to communicate with workers located in NYCT’s headquarters and operations facilities. The fully wireless satellite communications system is designed to work inside buildings and onboard vehicles, underground and in other locations, according to a prepared statement.
