Today, National Steel Car Ltd. (NSC) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a $350 million freight-car manufacturing facility in Colbert County, Ala., in the state's Shoals region.
To be completed in late 2008 or early 2009, the plant will produce about 10,000 cars annually and employ 1,800 people. NSC currently builds about 15,000 cars annually at a Hamilton, Ontario, plant.
Earlier this year, NSC parent National Industries Inc. formed a new subsidiary, National Alabama Corp., to build and operate the Shoals facility.
