The Nebraska Department of Roads’ Railway Council recently provided grants totaling $3.2 million to three short lines. The council obtained the funds through the federal Local Rail Freight Assistance Act.

The state agency granted $1.3 million to the 340-mile Nebraska Central Railroad Co. (NCRC) to construct four classification tracks; $1.2 million to the 120-mile Nebraska Northeastern Railway Co. to rehabilitate track, replace joint bolts and ties, repair a bridge and control erosion; and $700,000 to the 559-mile Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado Railway Inc. (NKCR) to install ties, surface track and renew grade crossing timbers.

Each railroad will provide 30 percent matching funds for the projects, which will begin in spring 2007.

NCRC is owned by Rio Grande Pacific Corp. and NKCR is owned by OmniTrax Inc. The Nebraska Northeastern is an independent short line.
