New England passenger-rail authority seeks to raise Amtrak Downeaster fares

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPA), which manages Amtrak's Downeaster service between Maine and Boston, has proposed raising fares next year to offset rising fuel and operating costs.

The authority proposes to increase one-way fares by up to $2 and multi-ride passes, by up to 10 percent. The hikes are expected to generate about $150,000 annually. This month, NNEPA is accepting public comments on the fare increase, which would go into effect in January.
