New York Air Brake to supply ECP brakes to Australian miner

advertisement

New York Air Brake Corp. (NYAB) recently obtained contracts from Australian mining firm Fortescue Metals Group Ltd to supply electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) air brakes.

NYAB will provide its EP-60 ECP technology for 400 married pairs of iron ore cars and 17 new GE – Transportation locomotives. Fortescue will use the ECP-equipped rolling stock to move iron ore from Pilbara region mines to the mining company’s new Port Hedland facility.

Designed to shorten stopping distances and reduce in-train forces, EP-60 uses electronic signals to transmit brake commands from the locomotive to cars. Signals simultaneously reach all cars, which apply brakes at the same time. The ECP system is the only one approved by the Association of American Railroads for revenue service, according to a statement prepared by NYAB, which is part of the Knorr-Bremse Group.
