The New York & Atlantic Railway Co. (NYA) recently obtained a federal grant to install equipment designed to reduce its locomotive emissions by more than one-third. The equipment will reduce engine idling for NYA’s 11-unit locomotive fleet and reduce the railroad’s carbon footprint by 35 percent, the short line estimates.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program provided funding for the $1 million project. Work will begin as soon as the federal grant is finalized, NYA officials said in a prepared statement.

The grant culminates a three-year effort by the short line to improve air quality on its 269-mile line, which serves much of Long Island, N.Y., NYA officials said.

An Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc. subsidiary, NYA serves more than 85 businesses along MTA Long Island Rail Road’s system and moves more than 18,000 carloads annually.
