New York DOT solicits grant applications for rail, port projects

Gov. Andrew Cuomo yesterday announced the availability of $87 million in state and federal funding for rail and port infrastructure improvement projects in New York.

The New York State Department of Transportation is soliciting candidate projects for funding under the Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program (PFRAP) and Section 130 Railway-Highway Grade Crossing Program.

The solicitation seeks applications for $85.5 million available under the PFRAP program, which provides assistance for rail and port capital investments to preserve and enhance the state's major trade and passenger corridors. Also, applications are being sought for $1.5 million through the Section 130 program, which funds improvements to crossing surfaces at public crossings.

Completed applications will be accepted until April 22. More information is available here.

Eligible project activities include track and bridge rehabilitation; yard, terminal and siding construction; elimination of clearance obstructions; wharf, dock and bulkhead construction and reconstruction; dredging; grade-crossing resurfacing; material-handling equipment storage facilities; and other projects that enhance economic competitiveness and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

"Our statewide and regional economies depend on having a reliable and resilient transportation network to support commercial activities," Cuomo said in a press release. "These targeted investments allow us to modernize our state's aging rail and port infrastructure, helping to spur economic growth and ensure we remain competitive in today's global economy."
