MTA Capital Construction Corp. recently awarded a contract to Vollmer Associates L.L.P. to design the structural box for a new MTA New York City Transit South Ferry Terminal subway station.

Scheduled to be complete in 2007, the $200 million project includes designing and constructing a new structural box for the South Ferry station in lower Manhattan. The upgraded station will feature two tracks and a center island platform to accommodate 10-car trains. The facility is expected to increase fluidity on the 7th Avenue/Broadway Line.

The approach tunnel and station will be constructed underneath three existing subway tunnels. Design/build joint venture Schiavone Construction Co. Inc/Granite Halmar Construction Co. Inc. will modify the existing subway tunnel under Greenwich Street so the new tunnel can branch off to the west underneath a portion of Battery Park, then cross under the existing tunnel approach to the South Ferry loop tracks and then beneath the 4/5 subway tunnel to Brooklyn.

The alignment will continue to State Street and terminate under Peter Minuit Plaza in front of the new Whitehall Ferry Terminal.
