advertisement
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) recently proposed spending a record $625 million for security-related operating and capital expenditures in 2006. The authority has spent $2.3 billion on security since Sept. 11, 2001, and $2.9 billion since 2000.
This year, PANYNJ will spend almost $400 million on security to support the Port Authority Police Department, Office of Emergency Management and other personnel that monitor the agency’s facilities. Security-related operating costs are projected to increase to $440 million next year.
PANYNJ already is in the midst of a record-high capital security program, which calls for spending almost $500 million between 2003 and 2007 to implement state-of-the-art technology and other initiatives, such as enhancing security throughout the Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail system.
