New York/New Jersey port authority takes wraps off new rail-car design

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) recently unveiled a full-size mock-up of the new Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail cars. Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. is building 340 of the cars to replace the existing fleet.

The cars will feature video monitors that provide news, weather, sports information and service announcements; on-board closed-circuit television surveillance; three doors on each side for faster loading and unloading; enhanced signage; and improved lighting. The cars also will sport regenerative braking, which enables the vehicle to return some of the electrical power used during acceleration to the power system when braking.

PANYNJ plans to begin operating some of the new cars by 2008's end; the entire fleet will be replaced by 2011.
