New York/New Jersey port authority test contactless payment system

Yesterday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) board authorized an agreement with New Jersey Transit and MasterCard Worldwide to launch an eight-month pilot program that will enable passengers to pay for transit services using contactless bank cards, key fobs, cell phones and other devices.
To be conducted at all 13 Port Authority Trans-Hudson stations and on two connecting NJ Transit bus routes, the pilot will help determine if passengers could ultimately use the devices to pay fares on all of the region’s transit systems. The pilot will be compatible with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s current test of contactless bank cards in the New York City Transit subway system.
To be launched in early 2009, the contactless payment will be available exclusively to MasterCard PayPass customers during the first two months, and to other bank-issued contactless card customers for the rest of the pilot.
“As we focus on expanding the region’s mass transit network, it is imperative that we explore ways to make the trip as seamless and convenient as possible,” said PANYNJ Chairman Anthony Coscia in a prepared statement.
