New canine unit patrols Pittsburgh port authority

The Port Authority of Allegheny County recently added a third canine unit to patrol its light-rail and bus systems.

Igor, a German Shepherd, recently completed a seven-week explosives detection training program. He joins Lord and Orrie, who began serving in June and November 2004, respectively.

The authority has taken several other measures to increase security during the past several years, such as hiring additional police officers, adding surveillance cameras and emergency telephones throughout the system, installing a chemical detection system in the subway, and conducting a security awareness training program for operators and supervisors.
