Surface Transportation Board (STB) Chairman Roger Nober recently announced he won’t seek another term as the board’s head, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR). His current term expires Dec. 31.

In late 2002, President Bush nominated Nober as STB chairman to succeed Linda Morgan. Nober was confirmed by the Senate on Nov. 14, 2002, and appointed chairman on Nov. 26, 2002.

Before joining the board, Nober had served as counselor to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation, chief counsel to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, counsel to the transportation committee’s Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, and minority counsel to the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation’s Subcommittee on Surface Transportation.

“Nober brought considerable transportation expertise with him to the board and has used that knowledge in a thoughtful way,” said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger in a prepared statement. “As a direct result of his efforts, a number of potentially difficult cases were settled amicably by the parties involved without resort to regulatory proceedings. His efforts have also helped improve the lines of communications between railroads and [their] customers.”
