The streak continues for the North American intermodal industry. During the third quarter, intermodal volume totaled 3.4 million trailers and containers, a 5.6 percent increase compared with third-quarter 2004 — the 14th-straight quarter of year-over-year gains, according to the Intermodal Association of North America’s (IANA) quarterly “Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics” report.

International and domestic containers totaling 1.9 million units and 800,000 units, respectively, rose 10.2 percent and 1.2 percent compared with the same 2004 period. Domestic trailers totaled 655,000 units, a 2.1 percent decline.

“International volume grew in all nine IANA regions, topped with a substantial 32 percent gain in the Northwest region,” the report states. “Trailer volume declined for the third-straight quarter, with volume off in seven of nine regions, but the rate of decline has slowed.”
