In 2009’s 29th week, U.S. railroads’ carloads remained down vs. last year — just not quite as down as they had been for most of the year. During the week ending July 25, their carloads declined 17.4 percent to 273,943 units and intermodal volume fell 17.9 percent to 193,332 units compared with totals from the same week in 2008, according to Association of American Railroads data.

Canadian railroads reported carload volume of 61,503, down 18.4 percent, and intermodal volume of 41,902 containers and trailers, down 17.1 percent year over year. Mexican railroads reported 11,541 originated carloads, down 13.8 percent, and 5,779 containers and trailers, down 15 percent.
