North Carolina DOT adds warning devices at four crossings

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Rail Division recently completed safety improvements at four grade crossings.

The division revised crossings signals or crossing signal circuitry and/or installed gates at CSX Transportation crossings in East Arcadia and Princeville, a Norfolk Southern Railway crossing in Sylva, and an Aberdeen, Carolina and Western Railroad crossing in Aberdeen.

Federal funds covered 90 percent of the projects’ cost, with the state funding the other 10 percent. The state and railroads will divide maintenance costs equally.

The projects are part of the state’s ongoing crossing improvement program. Automatic warning devices now are installed at more than 2,400 of North Carolina’s 4,100-plus public crossings.
