North Carolina DOT bolsters two crossings

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Rail Division recently completed safety improvements at two grade crossings.

The division revised crossing signals and installed gates at a Norfolk Southern Railway Crossing in New Bern. Federal funds covered 90 percent of the project’s $250,600 cost and North Carolina Railroad Co. funded the remainder. Maintenance costs will be divided equally between the city of New Bern and NS.

The project and another completed earlier in New Bern are key to the city’s federal application for the continuation of a quiet zone through the historic district, according to NCDOT.

Meanwhile, the rail division also revised crossing signals and installed gates at a CSX Transportation crossing in the town of Ayden. Federal funds covered 90 percent of the project’s $172,000 cost while the town funded the remainder. Maintenance costs will be divided equally between Ayden and CSXT.

The state continues to improve crossings through an ongoing crossing improvement program. Automatic warning devices now are installed at more than 2,400 of North Carolina’s 4,100-plus public crossings.
