North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Rail Division recently agreed to spend $20 million to restore nine miles of track between Greensboro and High Point. The 18-month project will begin later this month.

The rail division will provide $16 million and NCRR, $4 million to restore a second mainline that was removed in the 1970s and upgrade a train-control system. To be completed in three phases, the project will alleviate bottlenecks on the existing single track, boost freight-rail capacity and improve passenger train reliability.

The rail division completed preliminary plans and Norfolk Southern Railway completed final plans for the project. NS will manage construction and the DOT will provide additional oversight.

“As the state continues to grow, it is critical that we add tracks so that we can accommodate existing industries and serve new businesses that are considering locating in North Carolina,” said NCRR President Scott Saylor in a prepared statement.
