North Carolina issues infrastructure-funding grants to 11 short lines

The North Carolina Board of Transportation recently awarded grants totaling more than $2 million to 11 short lines to help fund infrastructure improvements.

North Carolina is home to 21 short lines. The state issued the grants through the Short Line Infrastructure Assistance Program.

Among the grants, the state awarded:
• $601,300 to the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western Railway to repair tracks in Charlotte and east of Oakboro;
• $500,000 to Yadkin Valley Railroad to upgrade tracks in the Rockford area;
• $318,600 to Carolina Coastal Railway to repair tracks, upgrade a bridge, and construct a turnaround track and locomotive service pit;
• $123,500 to High Point, Thomasville & Denton Railroad to upgrade tracks in High Point Yard;
• $97,500 to the Laurinburg & Southern Railroad to repair tracks in the Laurinburg area;
• $92,500 to Alexander Railroad to construct a passing track;
• $87,300 to the Wilmington Terminal Railroad to repair and surface track; and
• $70,700 to the Atlantic & Western Railway to repair a bridge.
