The Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) recently contracted Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) to continue serving as general engineering consultant for a new rail system connecting Raleigh and Durham, N.C.

The 28-mile line will connect downtown Durham with Research Triangle Park, Morrisville, Cary, North Carolina State University and downtown Raleigh. The project includes building 12 stations and a rail operations and maintenance facility, and acquiring 24 vehicles.

PB already has prepared the environmental documents for the project, as well as preliminary station design, design criteria, standard specifications and drawings. The engineering firm currently is completing the project’s final design.

PB will be responsible for serving as a liaison between station architectural designers and the yard/shop design-build contractor. The firm also will help develop construction contract packages, provide construction management support and help start up the system.

TTA expects to begin constructing the line in mid-2006 and launch service in December 2008.
