North Carolina transportation officials break ground on Kinston rail spur

On Tuesday, North Carolina Transportation Secretary Gene Conti and other state and local officials broke ground for a rail spur at the Global TransPark (GTP) in Kinston. The six-mile spur will enable trains to load large shipments without disrupting the park’s traffic flow.

The rail line also will connect GTP to a state port in Morehead City and connect North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) with Norfolk Southern Railway, providing the park access to the national rail network, state officials said in a prepared statement.

NCRR and NS recently partnered with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to construct a loading ramp, which serves an interim solution for transloading aircraft components from truck to rail.

The state awarded a $14.3 million contract to Hinkle Contracting Co. to build the spur, which is slated for completion in November 2011.
