San Diego’s North County Transit District (NCTD) recently awarded a $24.4 million contract to The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. to build the SPRINTER vehicle maintenance facility.

The contract is the last one to be awarded for the $385.6 million project, which includes reconstructing 22 miles of railroad in an east-west rail corridor owned by NCTD and building 15 stations. The agency already awarded contracts for the track reconstruction work, diesel multiple units and a 1.7-mile San Marcos Loop.

To be located near the Escondido Transit Center, the 40,000-square-foot maintenance facility will serve as a central location for SPRINTER operations, dispatching, security fueling and train washing, and will house administrative offices.

Scheduled to open in December 2007, the SPRINTER line will serve the cities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.
